About Bathymodiolus septemdierum

The deep-sea mussel Bathymodiolus septemdierum is a species of deep-sea mussel in the family Mytilidae, commonly found in hydrothermal vents in the western Pacific Ocean. This species harbors intracellular chemoautotrophic bacterial symbionts in its gills, which enable it to thrive in extreme environments by oxidizing methane or hydrogen sulfide to produce organic compounds. Bathymodiolus septemdierum plays a vital role in deep-sea ecosystems by contributing to nutrient cycling and supporting diverse microbial and faunal communities.

Classification

Original Description/Redescription

1. Hashimoto J, Okutani T. Four new mytilid mussels associated with deepsea chemosynthetic communities around Japan[J]. Venus (Japanese Journal of Malacology), 1994, 53(2): 61-83. (Hashimoto et al., 1994)

Partial Description

Shell large, up to 124 mm long, rather thin but solid, modioliform, infiated, elliptical, equivalve, heightllength ratio O.43-O.66, widthllength ratio O.29-O,46. Juvenile specimens shorter and more oval than adults. Umbones subterminal, prosogyrated, at oneeights anterior of the shell length. Anteriorend broadly rounded, dorsaimargin slightly convex, postero-dosal corner weakly angulated, postero-dorsal margin slightly convex or nearly straight, posteriormargin broadly rounded, ventral margin slightly concave in adult, nearly straight or slightly conyex in juyenile.External surface smooth with no periostracal hairs, dull white beneath periostracum, with fine growth linesin juvenileand subadult, with developedirregularlyspaced growth liraein adult. Radial threads feebly observable in the mid portion.

Etymology

The names of sea mounts Suiyo and Mokuyo mean Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The species name septemdierum isa noun meaning a week (=seven days)

Distribution/Locality

n:Suiyo Seamount and Mokuyo Seamount in the eastern edge of the Philippine Sea Plate. Clear hydrothermal fiuids(over3100C) is gushing out from chimneys at the Suiyo Seamount.
